CFLE-Parenting Coordinator

Parenting Coordination is a practice which utilizes a family system approach to facilitate resolution of co-parenting issues arising from divorce, separation or ongoing custody disagreements that may affect parent-child relationships. A Parenting Coordinator is an impartial third party who may be designated by the court or agreed upon in a mediated settlement to assist parents in resolving parenting issues through confidential procedures.

Parenting Coordination has been legislated in Texas since 2005. In 2007 it was legislated as an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process. In 2009 Parenting Coordination professional guidelines for education and training were more clearly defined. As a consequence the Texas Council on Family Relations deemed it responsible to adopt Standards of Practice for Certified Family Life Educators that provide Parenting Coordination services. For more information please review our CFLE-PC Standards of Practice.

If you are a professional who meets these Standards of Practice as a CFLE-PC and would like to be listed on our website please submit an Application for Website Listing.

If you received services from a CFLE-PC listed on our website and would like to submit a challenge to their professional ethics to our review board, please fill out a Challenge to CFLE-PC form and follow the directions on that form.

Message from the President

Conference Highlights from the TCFR President

On March 27-28, 2008, the Texas Council on Family Relations held its annual conference in Houston, TX. The conference, with over 100 attendees from Texas, Louisiana, and other parts of the nation, was a tremendous success. I would like to extend a special thank you to Susan Marsh, TCFR Program Vice-President, and Deb Cashen, TCFR Board Member, for organizing an outstanding conference and pre-conference. The theme for this year’s conference was “Promoting Healthy Families: The Practice of Family Life Education.” Keynote presentations were delivered by Dawn Cassidy, Education Director for the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR), Dr. Carol Darling, Professor at Florida State University and former NCFR President, and Kathleen Tenukas-Steblea of the Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County Florida. Also in attendance was Dr. Maxine Hammonds-Smith, current President of NCFR. Dr. Hammonds-Smith delivered inspirational remarks at the close of the conference.

TCFR is pleased to announce that Deb Cashen, founder and co-owner of Parenting Partnerships, Inc., and newly elected TCFR President-Elect, received the prestigious Moore Bowman Award, which is presented annually to a professional who has made a significant contribution in the area of family life education, marriage and family therapy, and/or family related research. Dawn Cassidy and Dr. Carol Darling, two of our keynote speakers, received Meritorious Service Awards for their support of Texas families. The Meritorious Service Award recognizes outstanding individuals associated with an agency, corporation, foundation, or other organization that has made a significant contribution to family life in Texas.

The annual TCFR student paper competition award winners were also announced at the conference. Ekaterina Harris, student at Texas Woman’s University, won the Outstanding Undergraduate Paper Award and Marcus Tanner, graduate student at Texas Tech University, won the Outstanding Graduate Paper Award. Ekaterina and Marcus presented a summary of their papers at the TCFR Awards Luncheon. Congratulations to all of our 2008 award winners!

Thank you to all of the students and professionals who attended this year’s conference, including those who delivered posters and workshops. As always, we are grateful for the TCFR Board Members who worked so diligently to make the conference a success. We also want to thank staff members at Parenting Partnerships, Inc. and student workers from a variety of Texas and Louisiana universities for their assistance throughout the conference. Finally, on behalf of TCFR, I want to extend a special thank you to Dr. Dave Sager for serving as President of TCFR for the past two years. Dr. Sager did an excellent job of leading the organization during his term as President.

I look forward to working with you as the new President, and highly encourage you to be actively involved in the coming months as we seek to promote healthy families in the great state of Texas and beyond.
